On the eve of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory the Department of History took part in the campaign “The Symbol of Memory”

The campaign “The Symbol of Memory” is aimed at developing among youth the feelings of gratitude, patriotism, national self-consciousness and belonging to the history of their country. Today there are about 9 thousand monuments in Belarus, which are places of worship for the dead and eternal reminder of the main value – peace. As part of the campaign, students of the department of history were photographed against the background of monuments, obelisks and memorials and accompanied their photos with information about these monuments. So the students paid tribute to the memory of the fallen soldiers.

Monument in honour of the soldiers-liberators

The monument in honour of the soldiers-liberators was built on Freedom Square (Brest) in 1965 in honour of the troops of the First Belarusian Front, which liberated the town from Nazi invaders. There is an inscription on the monument, which says: “On July 28, 1944, the brave troops of the First Belarusian Front stormed the town and the fortress, finishing the complete liberation of the Belarusian land from fascist invaders”.

Stalin Line

To create a monument to the tank heroes, a group of restorers from Shklov restored the building with a running gear and installed a tower “nut” on it. The tower was equipped with a cannon, but without armour and a command hatch. There was also no driver's hatch on the tank body. However, the masters of “Stalin Line” restored the T-34 in the full set, and the legendary car was installed on a pedestal in 2008.

Memorial Service at the Eternal Flame of Glory in the Brest Hero-Fortress

On March 4, 2020 the Brest Hero-Fortress Memorial Service celebrated its 48th anniversary. Time has shown how strong the connection of generations is, if the foundation is laid on impassable values: responsibility, love for the homeland, respect for the older generation and worship of its deeds to future. More than one generation has passed through the military-patriotic school of the Memory Service. Over 91 thousand high school students of Brest have shown the world that the Belarusian youth honors the civil and patriotic traditions of our grandfathers and great grandfathers, while the youth movement in our town has preserved the valuable traditions of the Soviet youth.

Monument to the armoured boat “BK-92”

Opposite the confluence of the Pina and the Pripyat in the park named after the Dnieper Flotilla there is a monument dedicated to sailors – a real battleship BK-92 mounted on a pedestal. The monument is dedicated to the feat of the paratroopers' seamen who landed on the shore of the Pina River at night from July 11 to 12, 1944. Occupied by the Nazis, Pinsk was well prepared for a circular defense: the enemy group was about 50 thousand soldiers and officers, 7 reinforced concrete bunkers were built, the city is surrounded by two lines of trenches, and all the approaches to the city were mined. The first echelon of the landing party consisted of Dnieper sailors and soldiers of the 1323rd regiment of the 415th Infantry Division. This was one of the few operations to liberate the cities with the help of the landing force. The Soviet troops captured 185 river vessels in Pinsk, because due to the guerrillas' actions, which during the operation “Dnepro-Bug” disrupted the sluice systems of the Dnieper-Bug Channel, 120 km of waterway became impassable.

Memorial Border Complex “To the Border Guards”

On the way to the Brest Fortress from the left side of Masherov Prospect you can see a large monument with the image of the defender's face and the inscription “To the Border Guards”. It is a whole memorial complex dedicated to the frontier guards. The Memorial Border Complex was reconstructed on the basis of the monument “To the Border Guards” (1972, sculptor M. Altshuler, architects A. Gorbachev and N. Milovidov) in 2001 with the funds raised by the personnel, veterans of the border troops of the Republic of Belarus, and other donations. On the right and left sides of the monument there are border columns showing the defenders of the Motherland: Ivan Belyayev (rifleman, deputy police officer), Alexander Zavidov (artilleryman, rifleman), Varlam Kublashvili (senior ensign, senior controller) and Ivan Barsukov (Hero of the Soviet Union, colonel, chief of the border detachment), Andrey Kizhevatov (Hero of the Soviet Union, lieutenant, chief of the frontier post), Alexey Novikov (junior sergeant, commander of the department), Grigory Kofanov (privy, soldier), Garmajap Garmazhaev (Hero of the Soviet Union, Senior Lieutenant, Assistant Chief of Staff). Every year on May 28 in the Memorial Complex to Heroes “To the Border Guards” a solemn meeting devoted to the Border Guard Day is held.
