Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition–2018
On 26-28 of January the students of the Department of Law took part in the most prestigious competition in international law – the national qualifying round of Philip Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
Our University traditionally takes part in this competition from 2010. Last year our students took the third place and were honoured to attend international rounds in Washington (USA) as Observer team.
This year the team of Brest State A.S. Pushkin University was represented by students of the Department of Law: Alisa Grechina (4th year), Nazaruk Maria (4th year), Tarskiy Alexei (3rd year), Radionchik Anastasia (2nd year) and Hilchuk Kirill (2nd year). The team started preparing for the competition in September 2017. For several months, our students were preparing writing and oral pleadings for this case under the supervision of the senior lecturer of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law Slivko Olga Yakovlevna and master’s student Yatskevich Victoria Yurievna.
Jessup competition – is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from over 645 law schools in 95 countries. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations. One team is allowed to participate from every eligible school. Teams prepare oral and written pleadings arguing both the applicant and respondent positions of the case.
This year Administration of International Law & Arbitration Association (BILA) managed to do the impossible – For the first time, 15 teams were registered for the competition and 12 teams, represented by the leading Minsk and all regional universities of the country, took part in oral rounds. More than 60 judges from 15 countries including the USA, Great Britain, Georgia, Ukraine, Estonia and Russia judged rounds.
This year our students proved their title of the best regional team. Our team received a special award – "Best Regional Team" and for the first time, "Best Memorial" (best writing).
As a result of the competition, we took the 3rd place. We lost to the Department of Law of BSU (1st place) and MITSO team (2nd place).
The team expresses special gratitude for assistance in preparation to the Jessup participants of previous years – Yatskevich Victoria, Pivovarchuk Daria and Gorbachuk Sergei Nikolaevich.
