Open University Competition “Scholar – 2020”

On September 29, the Open University Competition “Scholar” took place, which for more than ten years is organized by the Chair of General and Russian Linguistics of the Department of Philology. The competition participants were students of four departments of the University – the Departments of Philology, Geography, Psychology and Pedagogy and the Department of Foreign Languages, as well as students of five gymnasiums, two lyceums and two secondary schools in Brest. This year more than forty students and pupils decided to make sure of the literacy of their written speech.

The competition began with a welcome speech from the Dean of the Department of Philology Tatiana Senkevich. After that, a 3rd year student of the Department of Philology Anastasia Yurkovich made a report on the famous Russian linguist A.A. Shakhmatov. Participants listened with interest to the presentation of the 3rd year student Ekaterina Olesiuk about spelling dictionaries, which can and should be used by those who strive to be literate.

The competition program consisted of two stages - dictation and proofreading task. Since 2020 was declared the Year of the Small Motherland, the dictation proposed to the contestants was dedicated to the heroic defence of Brest Fortress.

As a result, among the students of special language departments the 1st place was taken by Anna Moiseichik  (Department of Philology, II year), the 2nd place was taken by Anastasia Yarmoshevich (Department of Philology, III year) and Diana Zavadskaya (Department of Foreign Languages, I year), the 3rd place was shared by the students of the Department of Philology Valentina Vandich and Anastasia Piletskaya.

The places awarded to students of non-special departments were given in the following way: the 1st place by Valeria Zhdanovich (Department of Geography, II year), the 2nd place by Marina Gavrilyuk (Department of Geography, II year), the 3rd place by Arina Boylo (Department of Psychology and Pedagogy, I year).

Among the pupils of schools and gymnasiums the leader was Irina Kotsyura (gymnasium № 1), the 2nd place was taken by Vera Shklyarik (gymnasium № 6), the 3rd place was shared by Svetlana Zhitkovskaya (lyceum № 1 named after A. S. Pushkin), Angelina Gritsuk (school № 9) and Anna Svirepa (school № 15).

The competition still attracts interest among students and pupils and, of course, will certainly take place next year.
